The security audit was conducted in four cities - Kyiv, Lviv, Simferopol and Kharkiv.
In Kyiv, the audit was conducted in Darnytskyi district, in particular, the safety conditions in the area of the clinic №3, located on the street. Boryspilska and interviewed residents of Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, who live on Petro Hryhorenko Avenue, Knyazhiy Zaton Street, Sribnokilska Street and are registered at the Family Medicine Center, located at 14-b Sribnokilsika Street; in Lviv, a survey of residents (women) of the Sykhiv massif was conducted; in Simferopol conducted an audit of the security of the territory, which is the main route for students of the Faculty of Slavic Philology and Journalism of the Tavriya National University. VI Vernadsky living in a dormitory; in Kharkiv, a travel route for female students living or attending classes on the campus of NTU "KhPI" "Giant".
The analysis of territorial audits was carried out in accordance with the guidelines "Safe for women - safe for all" Territorial Security Audit, developed by the Women's Information and Counseling Center.
Lighting
Kyiv
In daylight, almost everything is fine, but when it is evening, night, and in winter it gets dark at 17 o'clock, it is not very good because of poor lighting of lanterns. In some places there are just poles on which lanterns have never hung. The entrances to the houses are almost unlit.
There is a very nice park and stadium along the route, this road shortens the road to the whole stop, so it is convenient to go to the post office, savings bank, school, pharmacy and some shops, but when it gets dark there is no lantern, the park path is 300 meters long , residential buildings are far away, in front of the old factory house of culture, which is in disrepair, on the side of the stadium and the fence of the plant.
Lviv
Among the changes that would help women feel safer, they most often highlight "improving the lighting of the area."
All respondents note that there are dark places nearby where someone can hide (forest, bushes, playground).
According to the respondents, the lighting of sidewalks and pedestrian areas needs to be improved. Road signs and signs are often poorly lit, and lighting can be shaded by trees and shrubs. The houses are not located on the main street, and one after another is not lit at all. However, most respondents do not know who or where to call if their lanterns or light bulbs are not lit, broken or missing.
Simferopol
The problem is the lack or lack of lighting. It:
houses and garages
botanical garden of TNU
In the area of the campus lighting is mostly insufficient. Not all lights are on.
In general, the lighting of sidewalks and pedestrian areas of the campus needs improvement. Consideration should be given to installing lighting fixtures along the main alley of the botanical park. In the winter, between 17 and 20, students are forced to walk in complete darkness. It is also dangerous.
Kharkiv
The territory of the town in many cities is lit only by the windows of dormitories, or in clear weather by the moonlight. During bad weather or later, the area of the most passable place is almost not lit, which not only creates favorable conditions for the attack, but is also dangerous. In adverse weather conditions and in the dark, overcoming the route causes unpleasant feelings, because in addition to the lack of lighting on the road quite a steep slope, where there are no steps. This place becomes dangerous especially during rain, snow or ice.
Field of view
Kyiv
No information available
Lviv
The answers of 75% of women surveyed indicated that there were no acute problems in the field of view, as most of them clearly see ahead. 25% of respondents said that they have low vision, and they have a number of problems that they have to solve on their own (wear flashlights). And to improve the field of view, it is often suggested to improve the lighting.
Simferopol
The field of view differs in different parts of the route. In the park the main problem in this regard is greenery. The pedestrian can clearly see the road in front and behind him, ie the asphalt alley. However, he cannot clearly see what is happening on the right and left. On the way to Vernadsky Avenue, students are forced to pass through an array of houses and garages, but the walls and corners of the houses interfere with a good view.
Kharkiv
The field of view differs in different parts of the route, but more often the path passes between many houses, behind which you can hide in the dark and be invisible.
Insulation
Kyiv
I would like to have patrolling the streets and squares by the police and the people's wife (which has been gone for a long time), or by special services.
In the evening and in the autumn-winter period of the year, it is dangerous to walk alone near the Family Medicine Center due to the constant fear of attack in the area.
Lviv
Half of the respondents believe that they would not be able to get help if they needed it. More than half of the respondents say that they can see and hear people around them
they see and hear them. There are no surveillance cameras at the audit sites, and half of the women surveyed say they rarely see police, militiamen or other similar services, although the district police station is 500 meters away. The patrol can be seen to a greater extent during the day near the natural market, restricting the right to sell surplus products to rural residents, or on holidays on the street. Respondents believe that if necessary, they will not be able to call emergency services quickly. Some women point out that there is only one place nearby where they can count on help that is sensitive to problems (a church is located 500 meters away).
Simferopol
There are no surveillance cameras on the route. A police station is located in one of the dormitories, but students do not often see its staff patrolling the area.
Kharkiv
There is no information with the image of emergency phones. There are no buttons that can be used to call emergency services not only in this place. We have not met such buttons anywhere in Kharkiv.
Places of possible attacks
Kyiv
The road to the bus stop is very bad with potholes that have not been repaired for almost 20 years.
During the rain, a large lake overflows because there are no drainage systems.
On the way from the street. Boryspilska to the savings bank st. Poliska 12 should be passed next to a reinforced concrete technical structure, which has not been functioning for more than 15 years and is only dangerous. It is almost always inhabited by homeless people (homeless people). Also, this building is often set on fire by children because there is a lot of rubbish that does not care about housing and communal services.
Lviv
All respondents note that there are dark places nearby where someone can hide (forest, bushes, playground). However, half of the respondents believe that they would not be able to get help if they needed it. In general, women negatively assess security measures in the audited area and point to their own ignorance of how to behave in dangerous situations.
There may be sites of possible attacks at the audit site (eg house passages, porches, dark streets).
The majority of respondents, answering questions from the unit of operation of the territory, state the presence of garbage, traces of vandalism and broken things.
Simferopol
Road surface is poor or absent. Which leads to limb injuries. The road has a significant slope, which increases the danger of ice.
Kharkiv
The pavement needs attention, as well as the pavement, because in many places it is damaged. Traffic lights are almost absent. There is a big problem with the drainage system on Karazina Street, which creates big problems for crossing it during the rain.
The field of view differs in different parts of the route, but more often the path passes between many houses, behind which you can hide in the dark and be invisible.
Pointers
Kyiv
There are no addresses on the houses, and if there are, they are only on one side of the house, in places where it is difficult to notice them, or only the specified number without a street name. The name of the street is not indicated on the building of the Family Medicine Center, but only the number.
Lviv
The location of the audit lacks indicators of the location of the nearest emergency services, as well as symbols depicting important information - such as emergency telephone numbers, stairs, etc. People with poor eyesight cannot see them.
Simferopol
Only some houses have address plates, but they are not always visible. They are often contaminated or covered with third-party advertising signs.
Kharkiv
There are no signs on the route, both streets and house numbers, which leads to difficulties with orientation in this place. And because these places are not crowded in the evening, people who come to this place probably have a problem finding the right home.
There is no information with the image of emergency phones. There are no buttons that can be used to call emergency services not only in this place. We have not met such buttons anywhere in Kharkiv.
Animals
Kyiv
Overcoming their way, homeless dogs can be an obstacle, which is often dangerous, attacking not only children but also adults.
Stray dogs pose a special danger to people who follow this route, and especially in the evening, they are at risk of being bitten by walking carriers of rabies and other diseases, or get wounds of medium and severe severity. And when the snow begins to melt in the spring and dog excrement appears from under the snow, like snowdrops, which makes the route under study even more attractive.
Lviv
In the area where the respondents live, there are definitely both domestic and stray animals that pollute the area.
Simferopol
Stray animals are especially dangerous for women. On the route, they meet both alone and in flocks.

Accessibility
Kyiv
There is no passage between the garages, only small gates with high welded metal webs and poor quality, or no
coating. Only those who have nothing but a handbag can pass through such a gate. Women who walk with wheelchairs have to go around these garages, often covering several kilometers.
Residents of Pozniaky, living near the Family Medicine Center, having chosen the shortest way to the Center, have to go through the iron stairs, the journey of which becomes an extreme slide, where the main prize is human life, especially in winter.
Lviv
People in wheelchairs, as well as people with special needs, have difficulty accessing the premises in the audit area, although there are two modes of transport (municipal bus №5 and minibus №24), which are equipped with a suitable device for wheelchairs).
Analyzing the level of lighting on the stairwell, respondents give it both a positive and negative assessment. When using them, women feel differently: indifferent, insecure, normal, etc., but at night most respondents are uncomfortable to use them. Respondents believe that they will not be heard if they ask for help. (one of the respondents wrote that her neighbor was hit on the head with a fist near the elevator, lay there from 20:00 to 21:00, and was not heard by neighbors).
Simferopol
The route does not take into account the needs of people with disabilities. You can leave the park only through the gate, the lower bar of which runs at a distance of 20 cm from the sidewalk. There is no ramp at the entrances to the Faculty of Slavic Philology, Journalism and Dormitory.
Kharkiv
A common disadvantage of the whole route is its unsuitability for people with disabilities.

The audit of elevators revealed the absence of acute problems in this area, as they are mostly comfortable lighting and respondents know how to call for help when they are in the elevator. However, it is difficult for visually impaired people to understand the special characters in the elevator.

Assessing the general appearance of the house, all women point out that it is difficult for them to find their way to the right place if they are not familiar with the house. The safety of women is complicated by the fact that they mostly do not see what is at the end of the street at night, in the evening, and there are no small places to hide from the attacker, except the night kiosk, which is closed at night.

Assessing the general appearance of the place and the street of residence, the respondents indicate that the place is spacious enough, but it would be difficult for them to find a path or street in the massif if they were unfamiliar with the place. Women can cut corners at the corner of the street and get directly from the street to the house. There are not enough benches for rest in the audit site, but there are bars on the stairs and ramps. However, special marks or indicators for people with special needs/
It is worth noting that all respondents gave a positive answer about the place near their house where the car can stop. According to the women's answers, the payphone is located near the audit site ("in the same room", "near the house", "200-300 meters").

Regarding the most frequently mentioned improvements that the respondents would like to see, the first place is occupied by improved lighting. Other options for answering this question include improving landscaping (repairing houses, roads, sidewalks; benches, better cleaning; landscaping; playgrounds); control over animals (leashes, cleaning); safety of movement and transport; satisfaction of people with special needs, including visual, hearing or mobility impairments. Among the specific recommendations, women suggest strengthening the security and safety of the area (police patrols, surveillance cameras, improved lighting). The problem with animals is proposed to be solved by creating special places for dogs to walk, as well as fines for their walking without muzzles and in playgrounds. It is proposed to solve the problem of landscaping through park plantings and increasing the number of flower beds. Women are responsible for these changes in the city government (mayor, city council, district administration and housing and communal services), as well as utilities and people who are endowed with these powers and receive money for it.
Simferopol
Improvements to the area may include improving the quality of lighting and pavement, patrolling the area with security services, and adapting the route for people with disabilities.

Comments and suggestions on possible changes in the Questionnaire, given below, prepared by the auditors of Lviv:
"The questionnaire is too long - it will take about 30 minutes for a woman to answer all the questions, which will obviously mean a decrease in the number of respondents. And the smaller the number of respondents, the more difficult it is to summarize the results of the survey. You may want to combine several questions into one or structure a questionnaire. The questionnaire contains questions that are not directly related to the topic of violence / security (whether the animals pollute the territory, whether there are ramps for people with special needs ...). Question "What changes can help me feel safer?" perhaps more relevant at the end of the survey. In addition, at the beginning of the conversation, the person must offer his own definition of what "safe place" means to him - what are his characteristics, and what he sees as potential dangers.
